| The nickel is one of the newest mint issues. Originally, the 5 cent piece was a very small silver piece, called the half dime. In 1866, due to silver shortages after the Civil War, a larger copper-nickel piece was minted. The composition has remained the same except during World War II, when it was made of silver, copper, and manganese. |
