The roots of Mike's Coins started when Mike, our President, was just a kid growing up in Philadelphia . While Mike had the usual interests of most kids, such as baseball, soccer, hockey and basketball, Mike was also interested in American history and geography. To that end, prompted by his Uncle Auggie who was a coin collector (and would pay him a nickel for every wheat penny he found in change) Mike began to take up a hobby of coin collecting. He would go down to his local coin shop when he was 8 or 9 years old with his father and buy “grab bags” of coins, all of which had a variety and the price paid were much less than the Red Book values at the time. Mike began to take these coins and sell them at local flea markets and swap meets and make a little money here and there. He would take this profit and buy some of his favorite coins to hold in a collection. Through many years, this collection grew and grew.
Eventually, Mike went to high school, college, and then entered the working world as an insurance agent and financial services representative. Mike was a decent insurance agent and successful enough to buy a condo outside of Philadelphia at the age of 22. Unfortunately, right after he bought this condo, the stock market took a rapid downturn. Hundreds of insurance companies, who had assets in stocks, were being liquidated by the state or refused to take new customers. As a result Mike lost his job selling insurance. The day that Mike lost his job he received a notice from the condominium association that he and everyone else would be assessed $2000 for new roofs, and the money was due within a month! Not wanting to face eviction from the condo, Mike began to list his coin collection on a fledgling auction site, called Ebay.
Mike was fortunate to get enough revenue from the sales of much of his coin collection to make mortgage payments and pay the association. He was also pleasantly surprised that the value of the coins went up substantially over the course of 10 to 15 years. So much so that when he went back to work at a new insurance firm, Mike began to buy and sell rare coins on the side on Ebay.
In 2004, the business began to pick up to the point that Mike was able to quit his insurance job and devote all his time to Mike's Coins. Later that year he opened a website, and began a mail-order business as well. Now, Mike's Coins is one of the top 3,000 user names for positive feedback in all of Ebay.
Mike's Coins started out small and we remember our roots. While we have numerous clients that buy large quantities of coins at a time, we don't forget the small collector. That's why we charge a flat rate shipping of only $5 on anything bought on our site, and we accept all sizes of orders. And, our prices are competitive enough that we supply coins to a lot of people who resell them at flea markets and swap meets. We believe that coin collecting ought to be fun and enjoyable, and we put this love of the hobby into satisfying all of our customers, big or small.
